Formal Inquiry: The Sonata Undressed was a one-of-a-kind performance that wove chamber music, visual art and poetry into a complex exploration of the classical sonata form.
One of the most dominant composing structures in music for more than two centuries, the sonata was at one point more than a kind of music – it was, arguably, almost a way of thinking.
Inspired by the form, Purcell Kahler brought together a small group of musicians, poets and visual artists to learn more about sonatas and discover how they could work in music, poetry and visual art.
The result was a hybrid performance of linked sonnets in sonata form, visual art created and arranged according the rules of sonata movements, and a new string trio.
Performed at Velocity Dance Center, June 2011
Piano Trio in G No. 2, Adagio at Have Your Cake and Eat It Two.
Vagaries in Not From Around Here: A Series of Unlikelihoods was Carrie Purcell Kahler’s contribution to a performance in which six writers were paired with other artists to create original work about identity and place in a variety of unfamiliar media. For “Vagaries” Purcell Kahler wrote a lyric essay and worked with cello player Hannah Mareckova to compose a cello conversation.
